Acrylic on canvas
40 x 30 inches
2026
In this piece, Martin Luther King Jr. is placed inside a library, surrounded by the knowledge that helped shape his voice and his courage. Instead of seeing him at a podium or in the middle of a march, we see him in a more personal moment of thought and preparation.
On the shelves behind him, I blended books from his era with a few modern titles and some of my own personal favorites. This was intentional. It’s a way of connecting the past to the present and acknowledging the path he helped create for young African American men like me. The ideas continue, the growth continues, and we’re still building on that foundation.
The light on his figure against the darker shelves positions him as both a student and a teacher. Someone who absorbed wisdom and then gave it back to the world with purpose. This piece is a reminder that knowledge, discipline, and intention are powerful tools for change.
